When it comes to the Kachina and Thunderbird Lodge, it’s all about the views

Our  team at Cadiz Collaboration designed a contemporary guestroom that blended in with the immediate surroundings: the Grand Canyon.

Located on the rim of the Grand Canyon, half of the rooms at the Kachina Lodge have partial canyon views.  Part of the refurbishment of the two-queen bed/one-king guestrooms included new lounge chairs, side tables, upgrades to carpet, paint, window coverings, and lighting.  Refreshing existing furniture helped us align with our sustainability goals.

Overview

Our thought leader is Mark Slymen with the Montage Hotels & Resorts. Mr. Slymen oversees all sustainable development and operational practices for the hotel group.This includes existing properties in Laguna Beach and Beverly Hills and those under development in Deer Valley, Utah and Los Cabos, Mexico.

He began his career in the hospitality industry in the family owned and operated Aliso Creek Inn & Golf Course in Laguna Beach. Prior to the Montage purchase of Aliso Creek Inn & Golf Course in 2004, Mr. Slymen was the golf course manager and superintendent, and assisted in accounting and information technology support. In 2006, his focus shifted towards development and entitlement support. In this role he developed additional knowledge and interest in sustainability and obtained LEED accreditation. Mr. Slymen helped oversee the LEED process for Montage Beverly Hills, resulting in a “Gold” level certification awarded by the USGBC in April 2009.

Mr. Slymen plays an active role in the Environmental Impact Committee at both Montage Laguna Beach and Montage Beverly Hills. He is also involved in many organizations including the Hospitality Adaptations Working Group for the national chapter of the USGBC, the Hospitality Committee for the Orange County Chapter of the USGBC and serves on the Board of Directors for the Ocean Institute.

Our design team has been specifying wood flooring for our restaurants, guestroom entrances and suites. Creating sustainable flooring solutions for our customers has been easy with the abundance of great products on the market. We are especially excited about the availability of FSC certified engineered flooring and reclaimed teak wood.

Teak Floor

Teak floor at Lava’s on Poipu Beach . Our design team incorporated the durable teak floor into our remodel project at  Sheraton Kauai Resort. Teak is resistance to water and has proven to be an excellent hardwood to use. Teak products are  FSC certified and organically grown, so you can be sure that no chemicals will leach into your environment.

Students from California State University, Long Beach’s Department of Design attended a lecture by Lorraine Francis from Cadiz Collaboration on February 15, 2013.  The 24 attendees, including their professor Dorothy Ottolia, AIA learned about sustainability as well as how to selecting and present materials in various ways to clients – such as informally vs. on a board.

Cliff Frana officially joined Evolve in April 2011 to become their National Sales Manager. His primary focus is creating corporate brand acceptance as well as engaging management and ownership groups.  Cliff has I been involved in hospitality sales for 5-years, beginning with a regional hospitality drapery company based in Knoxville, TN, where he currently resides.
