Be a VOICE, not an ECHO!

The proliferation of hospitality conferences in recent years has left me with an acute sense of déjà vu, where each event is an uninspired reenactment of the last, much like an indistinct lobby scent—pleasant enough to ignore, but entirely devoid of any lasting impression. The discourse has become a predictable litany of recycled talking points, where industry jargon is parroted without question or nuance. We find ourselves in an echo chamber, where true originality is conspicuously absent. The term “authenticity,” once a revered cornerstone of our industry, has been commodified and diluted to the point of losing its essence. It has devolved into an apologetic framework, a convenient term we deploy when we lack the courage to express an opinion that might challenge the status quo or provoke genuine reflection.

Landscaping on the Edge: Adapting California Residential Home Development to Wildfire Realities

By Paul Wong from LandCreative, Inc.

Wildfires are changing California gardens. Especially those along the edges of New Developments and natural open spaces.

An ideal lush, or palm tree filled garden along a natural open space will be changing in the future. California wildfires have forced local fire agencies to very strict landscape fire codes. With these new codes, community landscapes and gardens will have an austere look, with less trees and shrubs.

Conversation with David Leventhal: Revitalizing Journeys

Navigating the Path to a Regenerative Future in Hospitality Design

Lorraine Francis: Can you share the journey of Playa Viva and how has the vision evolved over these years?

David Leventhal: Playa Viva’s evolution began with our Troncones home turned Airbnb, emphasizing community and values encapsulated in “Where your vacation meets your values.” Meeting Bill Reed in Greenville initiated a regenerative development journey, involving detailed studies and design charrettes. Originally planning fractional ownership homes and a boutique hotel, economic challenges led to Playa Viva becoming a boutique hotel in 2008. Evolution continued with queen and king echocositas to accommodate yoga retreat demands. Funding from Conservation International and Root Capital supported these changes. Notably, an idea emerged to transplant palm trees from the coconut grove to the beach, using their root balls as living piers to anchor sensitive dunes. Recent developments include the creation of tree houses and the Manta Treehouse Village, inspired by drone photography. Playa Viva has transformed into a retreat center, sparking curiosity about future developments.

Conversations with Janis Cannon: the Impact of Color in Hospitality

*Janis Cannon, SVP, Upscale Brands, Choice Hotels International

Lorraine Francis: I’ve been doing some initial research on the biological and psychological effects that color has on people and how we can take advantage of that, especially in hospitality, and I’m so interested in your point of view.

Janis Cannon: Thanks, I’m happy to have the conversation with you. From working on Cambria Hotels, you know that you always start with a design philosophy and color is a big part of how that design philosophy is brought to life.

COLOR IN BRANDING

LF: Why does color matter so much for brands in general and how do they tend to think about color?

JC: Often, brands use color to define their purpose. UPS brown is about reliability and dependability and McDonald’s red and yellow are about energy and fueling up. The yellow of their golden arches is also a statement of consistency and quality. Luxury brands also define themselves with color associations- Tiffany’s robin’s egg blue speaks to the fragility of love and Hermes orange elegantly shouts, “I’ve made it”.

It’s interesting how Hermes orange is not far from road crew orange cones and markers, yet it means something completely different when associated with a brand’s positioning. Hermes has been able to make it mean something quite extraordinary in the luxury space and create such a strong legacy brand of quality. This same orange can manage to live in two spaces with different branding positions.

LF: Yes, some other brand associated colors that come to mind are Fanta’s orange, which is a different tone then Hermes and feels confident and fun, Apple’s gray and white, which feels neutral and calm, and Whole Foods’ green, which suggests trust and well-being.

JC: In terms of retail, Apple is a great example. It’s a company that’s built on creativity and innovation and they use so much white space. White space is the opportunity, the blank canvas for you to be able to create and innovate.

Elevated Essentialism

CONVERSATIONS: Severine Obertelli & Lorraine Francis explore Elevated Essentialism.

There is a difference between merely visiting a place and truly getting to know it.

Minimalism is newly reinvigorated by the concept that “less is better”.

After a year of the pandemic, this idea has been explored again, with an emphasis of moving guests into their re-imagined guestroom as a sanctuary. The trend continues to move travelers away from lavish over-the-top displays of wealth to a more minimal boutique approach in design and customized guest services.

The shift to paring down to great quality essentials focuses our attention towards a well-lived life. The goal is having just enough of what you need and nothing more- while still being surrounded by comfort, beauty, nature, and meaningful human connection.

CADIZ XPLR RUG COLLECTION LAUNCH

We are excited to unveil our new product design collection: cadizXPLR. This spring we are launching our first collection of rugs made in the USA and soon we will expand our capsule collection to include lighting, textile, wall-covering and affordable luxury home goods.

Our rugs are directly influenced by weaving techniques, that date back to the early days of Americas first settlers to help warm the floors of their homes. These industrious women passed down their treasured rugs and braiding techniques through the generations, creating the first true examples of American rug-making. We wanted to honor the rich tradition of craftsmanship while re-envisioning form, color, and texture to create a modern, revitalized collection. Our dream is to bring a feeling of adventure, joy and easy living into hotels and everyday life.

SLEEP + HOSPITALITY

Hospitality industry owners and developers are always searching for new avenues to create memorable experiences for their guests, and the growing Sleep Movement offers them a variety of interesting opportunities. The driving factor in the recent focus on great sleep experiences is the recognition of sleep’s benefits to health and wellness including reducing stress; improving cognitive function, creativity, and well-being; and expediting healing.

We know that a great night’s sleep fosters mental and emotional resilience, but it can be difficult to achieve in a hotel environment. The deepest stages of sleep help boost the immune system, so how can we reduce sleep disruption for our guests? Today’s Hoteliers have great opportunities to increase their guests’ quality of sleep.
